Burnside had been kept waiting for the pontoons to get his army across the river, and by time they arrived, the enemy's high-lying positions had been strengthened, and were totally impregnable.
To carry on with this thought on the impregnable defenses, Lee was an expert at defenses as shown early on in the war when he devised the defensive bases of North Carolina and in other places.
Burnside had been in touch with Lincoln via telegraph. Lincoln insisted on the assault against Confederate entrenchments and heavy cannon fire from the top of the bluff. Against the advice of his commanders, Burnside made at least 10 to 12 frontal assaults that caused huge Union losses. Reportedly, his officers had to restrain Burnside from leading one of the charges against the Rebels.
