Chemical bonds between two atoms of the same element are covalent.

The difference between those molecules and other types of molecules is that there are not many of this kind of covalent bonds because the element is strongly connected only when the electrons in the valence orbital of each atom perfectly fit in the existing quantum spaces of the other.

For example, carbon can create diatomic molecules. It has a total of eight possible states in the valence orbital, but only four have an electron. When two atoms come together, the four electrons of one of the atoms start occupying the free states on the other atom as well as their original spaces, in a manner described by quantum physics. The opposite is also true, so both valence orbitals become complete and, since that's the state of least energy, it is a strong bond that creates a molecule.

Imagine it as a plug that is half male and half female. It can connect to another plug equal to it because they complement each other: the male part of one attaches to the female part of the other resulting in a perfect connection.

The atoms in a water molecule are held together by covalent bonds this means that the bonded atoms?

The atoms in a water molecule are held together by covalent bonds; this means that the bonded atoms have formed a hydrogen bond between them, leading to a water dimer.

I believe you are refering to a diatomic molecule- although it doesn't really matter whether or not it has bonded yet.

There is none. This is a molecule consiting of two hydrogen atoms, which are identical. Two atoms of the same type will have the same electronegativity.
