Another molecule that is produced that contains potential energy is called NADH. A net total of 2 ATP and 2 NADH is produced during the stages of cellular respiration known as glycolysis and linkage reactions.

After much rambling, the point to take home is that the main job of fermentation in the cell is the replenish the NAD+ pool so that glycolysis can continue which drives biosynthesis.
