One of the biggest concerns for US families at home was having a member of their family drafted into the military, and then possibly sent to Vietnam. Many American familiy's lives were routinely lived with "who's next"? Vacations, college graduations, high school graduations, marriages, child births, promotions at work, were all effected with "who's going to get drafted tomorrow."? Living under those conditions for ten years lowered morale in the US.
