The anti-slavery movement in America was known as the Abolitionism Movement. Abolitionists called for a total end of slavery and worked diligently towards that end until the Civil War. The Quakers were the first group to call for the end of slavery.

The abolitionism movement (as you refer to it) was a movement to end (abolish means end) slavery. In Europe the movement to abolish slavery started as early as the 1500s. If you are referring to here in the US, the movement started later and took longer. The Northern states were against slavery, some had laws abolishing slavery as early as 1780. The movement took quite some time and there were related movements as well, such as the "underground railroad." One famous abolitionist who was hanged for his crimes was John Brown. (An ancestor of mine.) Slavery in the US was not fully abolished until 1865 with the signing of the 13th amendment to the constitution.

Leaders such as William Garrison and Harriet Stowe were leaders for the fight to not only stop the spread of slavery but to abolish it in the US.The other, more formal organization was the Republican Party. Its goal was to end slavery in the US.
