Since 2 daughter cells will be created during cell division, DNA must first duplicate itself so that each cell gets the same DNA as the parent cell. Then it condenses into chromosomes that are symmetrical, with each sister chromatid on either side containing identical information.

Before mitosis can begin, the nucleus must make a copy or replice of it's chromatin, so that there are two complete sets of DNA. This step is known as replication.

Before the cell can divide, the DNA itself has to replicate. This occurs so that the resulting cells can perform all the necessary tasks, having a full copy of the DNA.
