die Mauer.
The road that ran alongside it was Mauerstrasse--Wall Street.
The Berlin Wall
West Berlin was democratic, controlled by West Germany. East Berlin was Communist, controlled by the Soviets and East Germany. Just to be confusing..... East Germany was called the GDR, the German Democratic Republic. It was that in name, it was not that in actual fact !

The city of East Berlin only existed from 1946-1989. At all other times it was united with West Berlin as one unified city of Berlin. However, during the aforementioned period, it was the capital of East Germany, also called the German Democratic Republic (in German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik).
There were a number of places, but it sounds as if you're thinking of Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin.

West Berlin was the name given to the western part of Berlin between 1949 and 1990. It consisted of the American, British, and French occupation sectors established in 1945. It was in many ways integrated with, although legally not a part of, West Germany. The Soviet sector became East Berlin, which East Germany claimed as its capital; however, the Western Allies did not recognize this claim, as they asserted that the whole city was legally under four-power occupation. The building of the Berlin Wall in 1961 sealed the border to West Berlin, which since the end of the Second World War had been surrounded by communist East Berlin and East Germany.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Berlin
It was a wall which separated east and west Berlin built by the Soviets shortly after the 2nd World War. Its function was to keep the population of East Germany inside the Russian sector; it discouraged defection.
Checkpoint Charlie was given its name during the Cold War as it was a crosspoint or checkpoint through the Berlin Wall. The name was used by Western Allies.
The strip of land between between east and west sections of the Berlin Wall was effectively no-man's land but was known colloquially as the Todesstreifen (the death strip).
As its name suggests, the Berlin Wall was in Berlin. It ran north to south across the middle of Berlin. There was also a much longer barrier across the middle of Germany, about 100 miles west of Berlin, separating East Germany from West Germany.
