FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSARE ALL COOKING APPLES SUITABLE FOR ALL TYPES OF COOKING?No! Some varieties are particularly good for apple pie, while others may be better for apple sauce or for baking whole.
So, what you want to make from your apples (e.g. pie, sauce, or baked whole) will determine which variety you should use.
(See Related links below where you can check the characteristics of different apples.)
ARE COOKING APPLES OK TO EAT RAW?
A few are. In fact, some of the varieties listed are very good eating apples. But most cooking apples are best cooked! You will be surprised how horrible they are if you try to eat one raw!
CAN I GET ALL THESE TYPES OF APPLES IN THE SHOPS?
No. Not all apples varieties are grown commercially. Often there are only one or two types that would be available to you locally. If you can't get the variety of cooking apple you would like, using whatever type is available to you will doubtless be quite suitable.
WHERE CAN I GET A PARTICULAR TYPE OF APPLE IF I CAN'T BUY THEM IN THE SHOPS?
If you want to try a variety that you can't find in the shops, you'll have to find a friend or local smallholder who grows it. Alternatively, you could grow your own! But remember, it might be a few years before your tree(s) produces enough good fruit to make an apple pie!
(From seed, 6-10 years. From a graft, 3-4 years, but it will take a few years longer to reach full size!)
See 'Related links' below for more information.
Cooking apples are not necessarily deformed. People cook with deformed apples because they are not pretty enough to use in other ways.
No.
umm what is that
I dont think there is a diffrence between the two
Sometimes, you can. But cooking apples in the oven is much tastier
There are many food items with names starting with 'a'. Examples are: apples, arrowroot, apricots, arugula (a salad green), asparagus, avocado, alfalfa, etc.
Cooking apples before baking them in a pie is up to the cook. It can be done either way. Cooking or sauteing the apples before baking will make a softer apple filling. The apples will be crunchier if they are not cooked or sauteed before baking.
