The USA - soon to be known as 'The Union' for the duration of the war - which did not recognise the newly-formed Confederate States of America.

The CSA wanted to assert its sovereignty over the island fortress, as it was in Charleston Harbour, and therefore part of South Carolina, a Confederate state. Their action in firing on Sumter is taken as the start of the war.
South Carolina declared its secession from the United States on December 20, 1860. At this time, Fort Sumter was a Union fort in the Charleston harbor.

What was the first state to break away from the rest of the country during the civil war?

If the bombardment of Fort Sumter was the spark that eventually led to the US Civil War, then the best answer, the most straight forward forward answer was Virginia. It seceded after President Lincoln sought 75,000 volunteers to end the rebellion in South Carolina. This sent Virginia to join the new Confederacy. However,it was not long after the November 1860 presidential elections that South Carolina seceded from the US. It declared itself an independent nation, for all practical purposes on December 20, 1860. It created its own army for its defense.

When did the 4 states secede?

I'm guessing you're asking about the four states of the upper south, which seceded after Fort Sumter. These were Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas. They seceded because the day after Fort Sumter, Lincoln called on all states, including these four, for men to serve in the army to fight the Rebels. That put these states to the choice - to make war on their neighbors, or to join with their neighbors in leaving the old Union and forming a new nation. Many people in these states had relatives living in states which had already seceded, so the government was asking them not only to fight their neighbors, but in many cases to fight their own family. This unhappy choice forced these states to join those which had already left the Union.

What federal fort did the Confederacy take to begin the Civil War?

Why do you think confederate forces attacked fort Sumter and when they did?

To assert their nationhood. Sumter was in South Carolina, founder-state of the Confederacy - a nation that Lincoln did not recognise.

When did the states actually succeed?

You mean, 'secede'. The first was South Carolina in December 1860. Six more had seceded by the time Lincoln was inaugurated in March 1861. And four more seceded after the firing on Fort Sumter and Lincoln's appeal for volunteer troops - effectively his declaration of war, although he could not formally declare war without recognising the Confederacy as a sovereign nation.

What were the southern states that seceded from the union and created their own nation?

South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Louisiana.

What was the status of South Carolina after it seceded from the US?

South Carolina seceded from the US on December 20, 1860. At that point in time South Carolina functioned as a separate nation. During that time it raised its own army from its militia and cadets from the military university called the Citadel. As it can be seen by the late secession of Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina which occurred after the surrender of Fort Sumter, South Carolina was taking a huge chance by leaving the Union by itself with no guarantees that other slave states would follow their actions. Texas, as example, at first hesitated to secede.Without Virginia seceding on April 17, 1861, the chances of any hope of success for a new Rebel republic were slim to none.

Why is fort Sumter's flag called stars and bars?

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston harbor in South Carolina. in 1861 South Carolina joined the Confederate States of America, and in so doing her star was now one of seven that was now repersented by the flag of their new nation, officaly known as the First National Confederate flag, its true nick name is the Stars and Bars. This flag is not ''the'' Fort Sumter flag. the use of the ''Stars and Bars'' at Fort Sumter simply shows that Ft. Sumter at that time after april 12 1861 was now under the joint control of the state of South Carolina and the Confederate government then sitting at Montgomery, Alabama.

What was the first battle in South Carolina in the US Civil War?

Fort Sumter - the war's first battle. Remember, there was no actual declaration of war by Lincoln, because this would have meant recognising the Confederacy as a sovereign nation. But Sumter is taken as the first day that the two sections were in a state of war.
