What needs to be done during purgatory?

Nothing. Whilst many Roman Catholics still believe in purgatory, the vast majority of the world's non-Catholic Christians do not. They believe that the idea of purgatory has no basis either in scripture nor in the history of the early church, but was a doctrine invented by the Church with no real basis whatsoever in fact. They believe that it is contrary to Biblical teaching, contrary to Christ's teaching and contrary to Paul's teaching on salvation as read in his letters, especially his letter to the Romans, where he makes it clear that we are saved through God's grace and not by any 'cleansing' after death. The concept of purgatory was one of the instigating factors in the breakup of the church at the Reformation. The selling of indulgences - certificates 'guaranteeing' a set number of years off purgatory in return for money paid to the priest for saying a mass for the person's soul - was the main factor that made Martin Luther start the reformation after he was convinced, by reading Romans that the Church had got things wrong. The selling of indulgences led to great corruption in the Church as priests would charge for the certificates, pocket the money, and then conveniently 'forget' to say any masses. So as far as the early Church, the Catholic Church up until the introduction of purgatory, and the majority of Christians today are concerned, nothing needs to be done in purgatory, as they see purgatory as an invention and that it does not exist - and most non-Catholic Christians today regard it as rather repugnant and against God's teaching. ---- Catholic opinion:

You mainly have to pray. Purgatory is just a place that is separated from God. That is what the torture is. You are temporarily separated from God and you develop a long for God but can't reach him. It is a place of purification, where souls that are good enough for heaven but is still with blemish is cleaned.

In purgatory, you can pray for other people on earth. Purgatory is quite good since it purifies you and makes you truly good in God's eyes and worthy of the treasures of heaven.

Yeah you pretty much do nothing but it would be a waste if you don't pray. It in a way it punishes you to clean you, you feel a deep longing for God, but you get to Him.
