EMG is part of an electrodiagnostic examination that involves both nerve conduction studies (NCS) & needle EMG (nEMG).

An electrodiagnostic examination may diagnose many things, including:

  1. A lesion of the nerve root as it exits the spinal column, called a radiculopathy.
  2. A lesion of a nerve plexus, such as the brachial plexus, lumbar plexus, or the lumbosacral plexus.
  3. A lesion of a peripheral nerve. The most common peripheral nerve lesion is the median nerve at the wrist, seen in carpal tunnel syndrome. Other peripheral nerve lesions commonly seen include the ulnar nerve at the elbow, the ulnar nerve at the wrist, the peroneal nerve at the knee, the tibial nerve at the ankle, and many more.
  4. A polyneuropathy affecting many nerves may be diagnosed. An example of this would be a diabetic axonopathy or a hereditary demyelinating polyneuropathy. There are many, many different types of polyneuropahty.
  5. A myopathy or muscle disease.

What does diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy entail?

Diagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy usually requires both a careful physical examination, as well as electromyographic (EMG) testing.

Can you tell the difference of peripheral neuropathy myotonic dystrophy with a ekg test?

Do you mean an EKG or EMG? An EKG monitors the heart and an EMG is used to detect abnormal electrical activity within the muscle. I'm not a doctor and I'm not entirely certain that either of the two would not be able to pick up the effects of neuropathy however any sings of it from these tests would probably be implicit rather than explicit as, if it did show up, I'd imagine it be in the form of signal distortion. There is another test which tests the speed the impulses travel through the nerves which I imagine is used more frequently to Dx neuropathy.

What is Rectified EMG?

Rectified EMG is EMG where the negative peaks are made positive. In Matlab: rectified_emg = abs(emg).

What are the two major types of EMG's?

Surface EMG & Needle EMG.   Generally speaking, only needle EMG can be used for diagnostic purposes.

What is Electroneuromyography?

Electroneuromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles and the conduction of signals along nerves. It is commonly used to evaluate conditions affecting the muscles and nerves, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, and muscle disorders. By analyzing the EMG results, healthcare providers can assess the function and health of the muscles and nerves.

Does EMG make good pickups?

EMG pickups are good if you want a heavy and fat, distorted sound.
