Jazz is a collective word for a whole range of 20th century styles, principally of black American creation which includes jazz related genres like blues or ragtime. Ragtime however is a composed instrumental genre, primarily for piano and principally created by black Americans, that combines syncopated melodies with the forms of the march; the syncopated style of this genre. So in short the difference between ragtime and jazz is: Ragtime is a type of Jazz genre, while Jazz is a collective term for a wide range of genres.
