A:Constantine had thrown his support behind Christianity because he believed the religion would help bring unity to the Roman Empire. He was dismayed to find that the Christians themselves were far from unified, nor could they even agree on what they believed in. He found Christians in disagreement on fundamental issues such as the nature of Christ and whether there was a Holy Trinity. He called the Council of Nicaea in order to resolve these differences, determine what beliefs should be held by Christians, and establish common practices and rituals. In this, Constantine was not entirely successful, with the existence or otherwise of the Holy Trinity being debated until Theodosius made the binding decision in 381 CE.

A breakaway movement, known as the Donatists, formed in Africa and prompted by the Christians of Rome, Constantine authorised harsh persecution of the Donatists. Once agian, this was not entirely successful in eliminating the 'heretics'. In 321, Constantine wrote to his representative in Africa that he was tired of maintaining the policy of forcible oppression against the Donatists and that no further persecution should take place.
