Canada and the United States are part of a unified telephone numbering plan called the North American Numbering Plan, or NANP. It also includes 18 island nations and territories in or near the Caribbean, including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Cayman Islands.
To place a call from one NANP country to another, including from the US to Canada or vice-versa, you simply dial 1 + area code + number, exactly the same way you do for a domestic call. However, international rates will still apply.
To call any number in Canada (or the USA) from the UK, dial 00 1 and then the area code (3 digits) and subscriber number (7 digits).
To call any number in Canada from a UK mobile, store the number with "+1" in front of the area code and number.
