In 1818 his mother died and his father remarried. It was his stepmother that encouraged him to learn to read and write, but his father didn't want him to because he "rented" young Abe to other farmers to work ( in the 1800's a father could do this and collect the pay of a child until they were 21). In 1830 the Lincoln family moved from the backwoods to New Salem, Illinois where he went to work as a store clerk. He lost his election for the state legislature and he purchased a small store. The store failed and left him in debt. He was made the village post master and deputy county surveyor also at this time he began to study law and grammar. He was elected to the legislature in 1834 and began his law practice in 1836. As you can see his early life had many obstacles that he overcame.

His mother died, he failed in almost every aspect of life. He lost in business, Congress, and others. He got over this by never giving up and still trying to achieve his dreams.
