It is hard to say which colony was the first to be discovered because there are records of Europeans (namely the Vikings) who reached the New World hundreds of years before major powers (i.e England, France, or Spain) ever did. However, Roanoke Colony, the first settlement to have started in present day Virginia. Jamestown was the first successful English colony. The Spaniards beat the English with their settlement at St. Augustine in Florida, which was not one of the original thirteen colonies.
