If you are talking about a Briggs and Stratton Engine (B&S) engine - you can use a straight 30w oil (above 40 degrees Fahrenheit). You can also use a 10w-30 motor oil below 40 degrees F. Now comes the fun part - you can use 10w-30 all the time if you like - just be sure to check the oil level frequently. By using a 10w-30 all the time during the hot summer of mowing, you will consume more oil. Therefore check the oil level often.
