For the 5.4 liter V8 engine in a Ford F-150 :
( 1997 , 1998 , and 1999 model years , 5W-30 )
( 2000 to 2010 model years , 5W-20 )
The Ford motor company recommends you use 10W-30 weight motor oil in the 1998 Ford F1 50 truck. A heavier weight motor oil can be used in extreme climates.

No , the 4.6 liter is a V8 engine , there is a 4.2 liter V6 that was first used in the F-150 in 1997
I use 10W30 Valvoline. Now have 112,000 on car so far so good .
According to the 1997 Ford F-150 owners manual : ( 5W-30 ) is used in the 4.2 liter V6 engine ( with engine oil filter change , 6.0 quarts / 5.7 liters of engine oil )
there a 1.6 liter and a 2.0 liter. The 1.6 liter is the GA16DE (Naturally Aspirated) & GA16DET (Turbo version) The 20. liter is the SR20DE (Naturally Aspirated) & SR20DET (Turbo version)
According to the 2005 Ford F-150 Owner Guide ( 5W-20 ) With engine oil filter change ( the 4.2 liter V6 and the 4.6 liter V8 take 6.0 U.S. quarts / 5.7 liters of 5W-20 ) ( the 5.4 liter V8 engine takes 7.0 U.S. quarts / 6.6 liters of 5W-20 )
