There are a number of options when it comes to 5w40, not as many as with the 5w30 or 10w30, but there are options. The following brands offer a 5w40, and I'm sure there are a few others too: Shaeffers, Rotella, Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platnum, AMSOIL, Castrol, Motul and Redline.

Depending on what you are looking to accomplish, there are many different oils you can use. Valvoline 5W40 synthetic, mobile 1 synthetic, 5w40 Castrol synthetic are all good choices.
6.3 Qts of 5w40 conforming to VW 502.00 standard. Oils that do not meet this standard should NOT be used. Currenty Castrol Syntec 5w40 meets these requirements, there are a few other American oils that do as well, but they are hard to find. The other option is to order German oil online such as Pentosin.
