They are actuated by hydraulic pressure. An electric solenoid closes a passage that allows high pressure oil to flow through an inlet check valve and back to the sump. When that passage is closed the oil pressure acts on a plunger in the injector and strokes it. When the solenoid is released the oil is vented through the outlet and back to the sump.
