It stands for Victor David Brenner, the man who designed the wheat penny. As all designers do, he put his initials on the coin; in this case, on the back.More InformationWhen the coin was first released Brenner put his initials on the back of the coin at the bottom next to the rim. There was a public outcry claiming that the monogram was "too prominent", even though other designers had put their initials on coins for decades. Sadly some of the opposition was fueled by anti-Semitism because Brenner was the first Jewish artist to design a circulating coin. The Mint gave in and removed Brenner's initials entirely. By 1918 sentiment had changed, in part due to the new dimes and halves that bore the monogram of another Jewish artist, A. A. Weinman. Brenner's initials were restored to the cent, but this time they were placed in tiny incuse (recessed) letters under the fold of Lincoln's coat where they've remained ever since.
They're both important but not the same thing.D and S are mint marks, for Denver and San Francisco. Cents made in Philadelphia don't carry a P mint mark for a number of reasons.VDB is the monogram of the Lincoln cent's designer Victor David Brenner.Where the mint mark and initials intersect is the famed 1909 Lincoln penny. When it first was released Brenner put his initials on the back of the coin at the bottom. Other designers had put their initials on coins but his were far more prominent, and there was a public outcry. (There's also significant reason to believe that some of the protesters were motivated by bigotry against Brenner's religious beliefs.)The Mint ordered the coin to be redesigned without "VDB" on the back. Philadelphia had struck a lot of them but San Francisco had only made 484,000 and the 1909-S VDB cent became almost an instant rarity. It remains a key date, with values as of 10/2009 ranging between $750 for a worn one to over $4000 for a coin in top condition (MS66)In 1918 the Mint relented a bit, and Brenner's monogram was placed in microscopic letters under the fold in Lincoln's coat near the 7:00 position.

VDB stands for Victor David Brenner, who created the front side of the cent (Lincoln's head). He put them prominently on the reverse side of the coin when it was first issued. The public thought it was egotistical (?) and a campaign was launched to pressure the mint to remove his initials. Later that year they were removed. In 1918 the initials were placed in extremely tiny letters under the fold of Lincoln's coat, where they remain on coins struck ever since.vdb are the initials for Victor D. Brenner, the designer of the front of the Lincoln cent. He also designed the wheat-ear reverse used from 1909 to 1958.

I would like to know the price you would charge me to put my monogram on this shirt sleeve.
The bride's name goes first. If you put a monogram on a napkin then her initial goes first, groom's last name initial and then his first name initial. You can flip the initials if it spells something you don't like.
