What does the smooth ER do in a animal cell?

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes, including synthesis of lipids, metabolism of carbohydrates and calcium concentration, and attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins. It is connected to the nuclear envelope. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is found in a variety of cell types (both animal and plant) and it serves different functions in each. It consists of tubules and vesicles that branch forming a network. In some cells there are dilated areas like the sacs of rough endoplasmic reticulum. The network of smooth endoplasmic reticulum allows increased surface area for the action or storage of key enzymes and the products of these enzymes. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is known for its storage of calcium ions in muscle cells. The sarcoplasmic reticulum is a special type of smooth ER found in striated muscle. The only structural difference between this organelle and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum is the medley of protein they have, both bound to their membranes and drifting within the confines of their lumens. This fundamental difference is indicative of their functions: the smooth ER is built to synthesize molecules and the sarcoplasmic reticulum is built to store and pump calcium ions. The sarcoplasmic reticulum contains large stores of calcium, which it sequesters and then releases when the cell is depolarised. This has the effect of triggering muscle contraction.

Rough Er is connected to the what membrane and to what Er?

It is connected to a membrane called the Nucleus

Where are two types of endoplasmic reticulum found?

the two types (rough and smooth) of ER are found together and continuous to each other - the only difference is the addition of ribosomes which make the rough ER... rough. It is found around the nucleus because their membranes are continuous.

How can you tell the difference of smooth er and rough er?

Smooth ER, endoplasmic reticulum, does not have ribosomes, and Rough ER does.rough er is studded with ribosomes while smooth er is not.

What is the difference between ruff ER and smooth ER?

The difference between ruff ER and smooth ER is ruff ER contains attached ribosomes giving it the rough appearance, where as smooth ER does not.

What are the differences between the rough ER and the smooth ER?

Rough endoplasmic reticulum is studded with protein-producing ribosomes giving it a "rough" appearance, hence its name. It works in concert with the Golgi complex to target new proteins to their proper destinations. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with both the nuclear envelope and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum has functions in several metabolic processes; it contains enzymes, and it stores calcium ions in muscle cells. Lipid synthesis takes place in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum is continuous with the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

What connects the two layers of nuclear envelope?

The endsoplasmic reticulum is an extension of the nuclear membrane. Ribosomes may be bonded onto the surface of the ER, and is then called Rough ER.

Rough Endoplasmic reticulum is connected to what membrane?

Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER), is given it's name because ribosomes attach to the outer side of the membrane.

How does rough endoplasmic reticulum differ from the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a network of intracellular membranes, it links the plasma membrane and other membraneous organelles. it is involved in the production, processing, transport and storage of materials within a cell.Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER), is assosisated with ribosomes, where proteins are made.Smooth endoplasmic reticulum(SER), lacks ribosomes and is involved in the metabolism of certain compounds and synthesis of lipids.
