Photosynthesis is important because it produces organic substances, like energy-rich carbohydrates, from simple inorganic ones such as carbon dioxide and water. All organisms need organic compounds, but only those that perform photosynthesis (autotrophs, or producers) can produce their own. The rest of us (heterotrophs, which includes consumers, decomposers, and saprotrophs) rely on autotrophs for a supply of organic substances.
Ecosystem energy budget`s depend primarily of autotroph`s such as photoautotrophic organisms. The budget (energy that can be used by energy flux) depends on these primary producers for the rest of the food webs.
To survive and reproduce, organisms need a supply of raw materials (water, nutrients) and a source of energy (light, heat, or chemical energy). Carbon-based organisms are composed of carbon and hydrogen chains so they need more carbon and hydrogen, and oxygen to form or use carbohydrates. Some organisms (e.g. some bacteria such as syphilis) cannot directly use or tolerate free gaseous oxygen.
The energy produced by energy producing organelles help the rest of the cell's organelles operate normally. The rest of the organelles use the energy (ATP) to do their normal daily functions.
In a balanced ecosystem, the biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) parts are in equilibrium. Nutrients cycle efficiently, and the flow of energy and nutrients to the rest of the ecosystem is not interrupted by a community of organisms or natural phenomena.

They fit at the bottom of the energy pyramid with the most energy because they get some of the energy from the sun and they get the rest from the producers and consumers who pass it down. Also because most or all sit on the ground they dont use very much in my opinion that is where the decomposers in the energy pyramid
