Turkey wants to join the European Union (EU). The EU is a political and economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. Membership in the EU offers many benefits to its members such as access to the single market increased economic development increased trade and investment opportunities and more. Other benefits include membership in the European Court of Justice access to the European Investment Bank and the ability to participate in the Schengen area.
In order to join the EU Turkey must meet certain criteria. These criteria include:
- A stable democracy
- Respect for the rule of law and human rights
- A functioning market economy
- The capacity to take on the obligations of membership
Turkey has been in the process of joining the EU since 2005 but has yet to be accepted. The process of joining the EU is a lengthy one and requires much cooperation between the EU and Turkey.
