Hereditary spherocytosis is a blood disorder that simply means "large round red blood cells". The organs that are affected? The spleen can become enlarged due to the breakdown of the abnormally shaped red blood cells. The reason for the enlargement is for the destruction of the RBC's (red blood cells). The gall bladder can also be affected due to the build up of the hemoglobin in the blood due to the destruction of the RBC's in the spleen. If the gall bladder develops the hemolytic stones, the gall bladder will most likely be removed when they deem it necessary to remove the spleen as well. The removal of the spleen slows down the destruction of the RBC's, and can help the bone marrow from being in overdrive to produce the red blood cells that are being destroyed so rapidly by the spleen. Most of the time in young children, the destruction of red blood cells happens during common upper respiratory infections as well as sore throats, or any other possible illness the body might be fighting against. It's important in a patient with Hereditary Spherocytosis to be immunized against the flu and pneumonia each year as they have a compromised immune system and even more so when the spleen is removed. Usually they do not do the surgical removal of a spleen until after the child's fifth birthday, unless a serious case or need arises to remove it sooner. Also, during the destruction phase of the Red Blood Cells, and the enlargement of the spleen, a heart soft flow murmur can be heard if the patient has a low hemoglobin.

Is it possible to have kids with Hereditary spherocytosis?

If you or the person you choose to have children with, ... have hereditary spherocytosis, you have a 50/50 chance of your child inheriting the gene. I have hereditary spherocytosis and the odds I was given was 50/50 and all four of my children have the disorder. My oldest and youngest had it the worst and had their spleens removed at age 5. My two middle children...the older of them had hers out when she was 11 and my 10 year old still has her spleen at age 10. Good luck. Don't let this disorder stop you from having children. They have ways to deal with the disorder in the medical field.
