They can. It may take them a while to get used to sharing a pasture, they may share space with cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and other horses. Cows, sheep, and goats are a very good choice because they level out the feild in which your horse is. A horse tends to graze very unevenly, and putting a cow, sheep, or goat in with it would help level out the grazing in your field.
In a stall, a horse sometimes gets used to having a cat, chicken, or even a small dog sharing some room with them. (be sure to supply a space for the dog, cat, or chicken to get out if the horse gets upset!)
