I went to my local Farm & Fleet as the batteries for lawn and garden are the same dimensions. Just make sure that you have equal or larger CCA (cold cranking amps 300) I went with a 350 CA. As of August 4, 2012 it was $27.99 with trade in. SO any battery with => 300 CCA will work.

Napa 5022nf and you can also use the Autocraft Gold 51R-2
Don't know of any cross ref for this battery. Standard group 22NF, 500CCA. That should be enough info to get battery replacement from local parts store.
Early 345's had a pair of wires reversed during manufacture. One had one wire and the other had two; they were either pink or purple with a white stripe. Consult a Deere dealer since they can access the service bulletin on this.
You can go to the John Deere website, deere.com. There you will find new wheel axles along with any other parts for your john deere tractor that you will need.
John Deere once said, "I shall not put my name on a good that does not have in it the best which is in me." Other more current sayings include: Nothing runs like a Deere. If its not a Deere, its not American(infamous).
You can find John Deere Collectibles at the Collectibles store online. Other good places to look for John Deere Collectibles are at Ebay and Amazon both have a wide selection.
In 1852 John Deere bought out his other partners in the plowmaking business, calling his new company Deere & Company, basing his business in Moline, Illinois. For the rest of John Deere's History visit http://www.deere.com/en_US/compinfo/history/index.html
John Deere and Cyrus McCormick were never together. They were rivals of each other ever since McCormick invented the mechanical reaper(combine) and Deere & Company were trying to invent their own(John Deere was himself dead at this time). They were even more rival companies when McCormick merged with other companies to for International Harvester, a huge blow for Deere as they still are strong competitors today.
While many other brands are well thought of, John Deere is currrently rated very highly due to their high-quality products. which is better quality riding mower john deere or craftsman
Thanks to Awan318 for the lead about the "Group" number. I guess "Group" is Deere-talk. My original Deere battery needs replacing. It says Group 51, but I didn't realize that was a proper battery number, so thanks for setting me straight. Now that I know what I'm searching for, I'm starting to get results. Interstate shows an MT-51R and an I-51. The MT-51R has 500 CCA (cold cranking amps). The I-51 has 425 CCA, which is a lower capacity, lower power, costs $6 less, and it weighs one pound less, too. The label on the original battery says 500 CCA, so I should probably go with the "bigger" battery. Physically, the Interstate website shows the dimensions are exactly the same. I'll do more browsing to see if I can find a lower price on a "Group 51."
"The John Deere 455 is not a current model and cannot be purchased new from John Deere or other mower/tractor retailers. One may be found on Ebay, Craigslist, or in local classified ads."
