If your 2.5 is AMC, then GM 2.8/3.1/carb or throttle body V-6 will bolt up to your tranny . Might be able to modifi Cherokee motor mounts {GM 2.8 V-6},then remove the distrbutor / oil pump shaft, drop-in a HEI distributor , The actual HP gain is not much more ....but the power comes in at much more usable RPM range.
If your 2.5 is an GM "iron duke" you can use 3.8 from El-Camino-Malibu or even the popular 4.3 swap ...but the trans wont hold up to extra power of 4.3..And if using lift & larger tires {who isn't}the axels will need up-grading.
