During World War II (yet beginning even before), the Holocaust arose as the result of several factors. First was a long-standing, even 'traditional,' suspicion of Jews by Europeans. Second was a particularly keen prejudice against Jewish persons and customs (etc.) felt by many Germans in the early 20th century. Third was the violent hatred of Judaism and Jews by Nazis. Fourth was the remarkable military conquest of most of Europe by Germany in the first several years of World War II: this established the practical means of letting the prejudicial hatred of the Nazis express itself in the attempted genocide of European Jewry.

The main factors which led to the Holocaust were social, political and economic.

There was a global economic crisis (The Great Depression), this led to mass unemployment and to migration of people seeking work. The political situation in Poland and the rise on antisemitism led to many Jews fleeing to Germany. This put greater pressure on the German social and economic systems. Adolf Hitler and the Nazis offered people a channel to vent their frustration at this and led to the Nazis being elected into power.

Once in power the Nazis introduced anti-Jewish legislation, thus creating a political climate which supported the exclusion of the Jews.

When the war started it was easier for the Nazis to instigate more lethal methods of eliminating Jews from society.

The cause of the Holocaust was the climate that existed in Germany between WWI and WWII. Following the conclusion of WWI, Germany's defeat was complete. The powers that won felt that Germany should make reparations to the countries that it had invaded, the peoples that had been conquered and to the Allied Forces.
