In the wild/ nature some orchids do actually grow on other plants. Orchids are are epiphytes, and have aerial root systems through which they absorb oxygen, water and nutrients; these roots (in most cases) are above ground. Orchards often are found clinging to the sides of trees in tropical and sub-tropical jungles, where they can be seen "growing on other plants". This is in fact a one sided relationship, the orchid using the plant to gain access to light (higher in the forest canopy), the roots only hold onto the bark of the host tree, they do not feed or derive any nutrition from the host plant. There is also a group of "terrestrial" orchids, which have roots which are anchored into the soil (like normal plants).
