Hundreds of political parties have existed in America. A few have dominated the national picture from the beginning. The first party was the Federalist. They were not an organized political party but rather a movement. Their main goal was to create a national government that could keep the states at peace with each other.

Then came the Republicans which became the Democrats but were more like the Republicans of today that the Democrats of today. The election of Andrew Jackson polarized the nation and created the present two party system. He united his followers and his opponents. His opponents became the Whigs.

There was another fairly large party, the anti-freemason party. It was also called, "The know nothing party."

The Republicans began as a small party, but for some reason the Whig Party collapsed, and the Republicans took in its members. The Republicans won the election of 1860.

In 1864, The Republicans rejected Lincoln as their nominee and chose Fremont. The Democrats chose McClelland. Lincoln ran on The National Union Party ticket. That is the only time in American History that the candidate of a minor political party won the presidency. Later that century, the Grange became an important political party in the midwest. Teddy Roosevelt created the Bull Moose party as a centrist party. It did not last.

Other local parties lasted. The Farmer labor Party exists. It sends representatives to Washington and they vote with the Democrats.

In the 1930s a number of Americans joined the Communist Party. One Communist changed his party membership to Democrat and was elected Vice President in 1940. If he had not been replaced by Harry Truman in 1944, America would have had a Communist President in 1945 when FDR died. In 1948 The Dixiecrats nominated Strom Thormond for President. He carried four states.

in 1992 Ross Perot created The Reform Party. It received 20% of the vote. It probably cost the Republicans the election and made Bill Clinton President.

In 2000 Ralph Nader created The Green Party. It received 5% of the vote. It probably cost the Democrats the election and made George W. Bush the President.

In addition to the two major parties, the Democratic and Republican Parties, there have been several other significant political parties in America's history. These include the Federalist Party, Whig Party, Progressive Party, Socialist Party, Libertarian Party, Green Party, and the Reform Party, among others. While some of these parties have faded into obscurity, others continue to have a presence in American politics, albeit on a smaller scale.
