Throughout history people have wished to be immortal but as you have hinted at there are problems within immortality. many would say that it is opinion as to weather immortality is a problem or not so lets start with types of immortality.
Type one: Live forever; If you managed to become immortal but without the good health that you thought it would include you would spend your days getting old and ill, and if depending on the variables of the way you have become immortal you will live forever in terrible pain wishing you were dead but unable to die.
Type two: Good health; good health and immortality overcomes the problems in type one but you have to live forever as those you love grow old and die around you. you cannot grow close to people as they will die. your life will be loveless and you will spend your uncountable years alone.
Type three: potions; when you say immortality many think of alchemists in steamy rooms brewing potions and elixirs to make them immortal but if you create a potion you have to repeatedly administer it and if you miss a dose you are dead.
so there are problems with immortality along with the fact that if everyone lived forever the world would be extremely overcrowded.
