There are many types of self-harm, ranging from direct abuse, to carelessness and neglect.

Direct abuse includes cutting, burning, suicide attempts, self-amputation of body parts for non-therapeutic reasons, and various forms of self-torture. Non-therapeutic reasons are specified, since if someone's arm or leg is trapped under a colapsed wall and the building is on fire, then self-amputation would be reasonable since there would be greater harm if they didn't do so.

Carelessness and indirect abuse include drug use, overeating, smoking, drinking, crossing traffic without looking, etc. A person who uses drugs isn't deliberately trying to harm themselves, but that is what they are doing, and they don't care.

Neglect would include not eating properly, not seeing a doctor when necessary, avoiding necessary medications, not being dressed for the environment, and not sleeping well.

Are suicide and self-harming OK?

Both suicide and self-harming are ways that people deal with anxiety and depression. They are not healthy ways of dealing. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Speaking as someone who has been at the point of trying it, I can assure you that you will look back and wonder why you were so upset, if only you hang on and don't kill yourself. The best way to deal with this sort of severe depression and hopelessness is to get professional help. Therapy can work wonders with depression and anxiety. You might also need antidepressant medication - it is not habit-forming and most of the newer medicines have fewer side effects. Self-harming seems to be a way to control anxiety. It makes you feel as if you are dealing with the problem. The truth is, you are just switching one anxiety for another. You quickly become addicted to harming yourself, and if you get into a situation where you cannot do it, you get hysterical. Self-harming does not work. Self-harming is related to eating disorders like anorexia and bulemia. It is an unhealthy response. Therapy will help you to change those unhealthy responses and learn healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety.

How do you self injure without it being fatal?

get an elastic band and 'twang' the elastic band against your arm when you want to self harm. however this was something that was suggested to me to stop me from properly injuring myself when self harming, if you're not receiving professional help I would urge you to seek it out. there are other ways to relieve stress even if they may not be obvious or work all the time.
