A variety of names had been suggested for Australia's capital, some tongue-in-cheek, such as Kangaremu, Australific and Meladneyperbane, which was a combination of the other state capital's names. Other possible choices were Olympus, Paradise, Captain Cook, Shakespeare, Eucalypta and Myola. The final choice of Canberra remained a secret until the laying of the foundation stones on 12 March 1913.

Originally, about three dozen sites were proposed for Australia's national capital. After the authorities inspected 23 of the sites, the choice was narrowed down to seven, based on ready water supply, livable climate and landforms conducive to the establishment of a showcase national capital. Apart from the Yass-Canberra district, sites included Albury, Bombala, Lake George, Lyndhurst, Tumut and Dalgety.

Sydney and Melbourne vied for the role of Australia's new Federal Capital, but because of the rivalry between the cities, they were not really seriously considered. The choice came down to a number of sites which were partway between the two cities, such as Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Bombala, Dalgety, Delegate, Goulburn, Lake George, Lyndhurst, Orange, Queanbeyan, Tumut, Wagga Wagga and Yass. Dalgety was selected as the favoured site in 1904, but was later discarded as being too far from Sydney. That is when the Yass-Limestone Plains site became the favourite candidate.

Numerous locations for Australia's feral capital were checked over by federal parliamentarians. They included Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Bombala, Dalgety, Delegate, Goulburn, Lake George, Lyndhurst, Orange, Queanbeyan, Tumut, Wagga Wagga and Yass. Although the first preferred site was Dalgety, this was discounted as being too close to Melbourne and too far from Sydney. The Yass-Canberra location was chosen as it was 248km from Sydney and 483km from Melbourne, within easy access of both cities.
