Raw materials and the lands that contained them became prime targets for expanding countries. New lands and raw materials could be exploited without danger of the exploitation effects reaching the 'mother countries.' Raw materials also at one time were people, hence the slave trade.
One motive behind imperialism and colonialism was the desire of ruling classes in capitalist countries to gain and control access to raw materials such as oil, coal, iron ore, etc.
imperialism
Imperialism was an expression of NATIONAL PRIDE of the various states that expanded in such a way. It was generally seen as a search for RAW MATERIALS, FREE LABOR to work or retrieve these materials, and the creation of new MARKETS to sell goods manufactured in the metropole to these new colonies.
It (Industrial Revolution) encouraged imperialism by: It (Industrial Revolution) created a need for raw materials and markets.
Imperialism
· For access to raw materials
Western imperialism put Japan in a position where they were excluded from attaining the raw materials they required for economic progress.
My realization is that as industrialization grew, so did the need for more raw materials and the markets in which to sell these new peoducts in. This spurred imperialism and the need to gain more materials, power, and control over nations

The motives for imperialism in Africa is that Africa was considered primitive and left uncolonized by the Mother Countries. Africa was a battlefield for the Mother Countries for any raw materials, because the Mother Countries were running low of raw materials after the industrial revolution.
To get colonies to serve as army bases, and to provide raw materials
The Suez Canal is located in Egypt. The role that it played in imperialism was that it was easier to bring raw materials from western Europe to Asia. It was a body of water that cut through the borders so that they didn't have to go on land to deliver goods.
Imperialism grew out of industrialization because the industrialized countries needed a steady supply of raw materials. They accomplished this by setting up colonies and exploiting them for resources.
