It has drum brakes in the rear, most parts stores let you search by make, model and year. Many companies make rear brake shoes for a 2001 echo, the last time I bought these I used WAGNER Z754, Quickstop Brake Shoes
rear ; 7-11/64 X 63/64 Brake; Years:2001-2005; Per Car Qty:1

There were 4 shoes in the box, which is how many you need for one car (two per wheel) and the cost was $22.

There are lots of how-to guides on the internet including a video that are Toyota specific, they are all about the same:

http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-change-the-rear-brake-shoes-on-a-toyota-corolla-162637/

But be forewarned that this job can be a pain to do yourself, it is MUCH harder than working on the front disc brakes. There are small c-clips and springs which are difficult to remove and reinstall. The drum itself can be rusted and difficult to remove. It could take you 4 hours if its the first time, so consider paying a professional to do it for you if you don't want the hassle.

I recommend you flush and replace the brake fluid when you do this job.

See the "related links" for a detailed diagram of the echo rear drum brake components.
