The battle of Hastings was caused by a dispute over rule of England. When Edward the confessor died on January 5th 1066, there were three main candidates for the throne. Earl of Wessex, Harold Godwinson, Duke of Normandy, William the conqueror and Harald Hadraada, a Viking king. Harold Godwinson was given the crown, but then Harald Hadraada attacked at Stamford bridge, in Yorkshire in the north of England. Harold Godwinson and his army defeated Harald Hadraada, and then received news that William was attacking in the south, and had set up a fort at a place later called Battle. William invaded because years earlier, Harold Godwinson had been shipwrecked in Normandy and William had held him captive until he swore a sacred oath to support William's claim to the throne. When Harold took power, William said he had broken his oath and turned the invasion into a crusade, this ensured that more men would come to fight for him.
He thought he should be king of England because Harold Godwinson made an Oath to William saying that oneday: william will be king. Anglo-Saxon domination of England ended in 1066 when Harold Godwinson, King of England was defeated by William the Bastard (afterward called William the Conquerer) at the Battle of Hastings.
He wasn't a bad king but he just didnt last very long as king
Harold Godwinson marched to the north-east coast of England and defeated Harald Haardrada of Norway, then Harold Godwinson marched to the south of England where he was shot in the eye by a Norman archer while fighting William The Conqueror. So really, the problem wasn't solved, England got taken over by the Normans from France.
THERE ARE MANY REASONS:He lost valuable men, including housecarls (most of his army was made up of farmers etc, housecarls are the trained soldiers in proper armer) when he went to fight Hardrada in the North, 200 miles away!He deafeated Hardrada and then found out that William the 1st of Normandy had landed just outside Dover. He then had to march another 250 miles down South- this tired his army out- one of his mistakes was not to rest them though he had many chances. also he was a noddy for wanting to be king lol!:)
he could rule all of England and King Edward the confessor
