However they had long been fighting for independence. 2) America before America won the Spanish American war, American president William McKinley told Emiliano Aguinaldo, (almost like the Filipino George Washington) that if the Filipinos helped America win the Spanish-American War, he would let them have independence. sadly, at the end of this war, America broke her promise.
