When most people think of the dominant mountain range in the United States, they think of the Rocky Mountains in the west. However, according to the History Channel's How the States Got Their Shapes, the Appalachian Mountains span 14 states from Maine to Alabama, and although they're not as high as the Rockies, they're far more steep. The reason they don't reach the altitudes of the Rockies' peaks is that they're a lot older, so they've been exposed to erosion for a lot longer. Granted, the eastern states are smaller than the western states. The bottom line is I don't know, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Appalachians.
