Muscles that get information from the nervous system are affected by polio. It would be like having nerve damage at a certain level on the spinal cord. At times, a person would be so effected, they would always have to live in an iron long which would breathe for them.

Polio affects the nervous system especially the motor portion of the nervous system. This system comes from the spinal cord to the muscles. It depends on how high up the cord the virus affects how much damage a person will have. FDR had polio and it occurred in such a way that it affected his leg muscles. He could not stand without braces and could not walk.

Some people the virus affected higher up in the cord in such a way they could not breathe because the diaphragm was affected. These people had to live in an iron lung the rest of their lives.

In some parts of the world polio is still as bad as it was here at one time. Our lungs are still in use there.
