You may be thinking of the appendix which is often removed in people without obvious negative effects.

Recent studies suggest that the use at one time in the human experience was to aid in our gastrointestinal system functions by holding a reservoir of the "good bacteria" that grew inside the appendix and spread from there into the bowel when needed. These normal intestinal "flora" now sometimes have to be provided through supplements when we lose the supply we have in our bowel from antibiotics that kill these "good bacteria" along with the bad. Probiotic supplemental tablets or liquids are used for this as is the reintroduction of good bacteria from foods that contain some of them, such as yogurt, buttermilk and other foods that are made with live cultures of "good bacteria".
