The primary area it effected was the southern Plains. The northern Plains were not hit so badly but the drought, the blowing dust, and the decline of agriculture in the region had a nationwide effect. The loss of agricultural production helped to lengthen the Depression, not only in the US but worldwide. The displaced farmers became the migrants described in John Steinbeck's, Grapes of Wrath. Families from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and Arkansas, packed what they could in cars and trucks and headed west. Most were aiming for California where they would become a class of migrant farmers, following the crops during the harvesting season.

The "Dust Bowl" generally is used to refer to a severe drought of the early 1930s which affected the states listed above. It also has a more specific meaning: the drought included large areas of prairie which had been plowed under to plant crops. The heart of this area was in Western Kansas and Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle and Eastern Colorado. Because of the destruction of the tallgrass prairie, the topsoil was unprotected and a great deal of it simply blew away. In the years following the disaster, National Grasslands were created to make such a calamity less likely in the future. The greatest concentration of National Grasslands is in the same area, including Kiowa, Cimarron, and Rita Blanca, which collectively cover vast acreage in the region.
