Third Party System
The party system that began when the first Republican was elected president in 1860 was the emergence of a two-party system dominated by Republicans and Democrats. The Republican Party was formed in the 1850s as an anti-slavery party, and the election of Abraham Lincoln as the first Republican president marked the start of their political dominance in the North and ultimately the reconfiguration of the party system in the United States.

He was elected Governor of California and later President of the United States as a Republican, and was closely aligned with Republican causes throughout his time in office.
George Washington. During Washington's two terms the Federalist and Republican (not the current Republican) parties were formed. John Adams was the first (and only) Federalist President, and Jefferson was the first Republican President.
