In 1853, the US President Franklin Pierce and Mexico's ruler Santa Ana agreed to have the US purchase land from Mexico. The area was a small strip of land between the US and Mexico. The US idea was that a transcontinental railroad could run from New Orleans to California. The chief US negotiator was James Gadsden. The agreed price was $10 million.
gadsden purchase
The Gadsden Purchase was negotiated in 1853 by James Gadsden. Mexico sold the United States a piece of land in what is now Arizona and New Mexico, in exchange for $10 million. This treaty helped to resolve some unsettled issues from the Mexican-American War and also strengthened the South's claim to the transcontinental railroad (there had been much debate about where this should be located). Some key people include: James Gadsden (the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico) President Franklin Pierce (signed the treaty) Jefferson Davis (Pierce's Secretary of War, who strongly influenced this agreement) William Marcy (Pierce's Secretary of State, who instructed Gadsden as to what provisions to push for) Santa Anna (Mexican president who signed the treaty)
The objections surrounding the Gadsden Purchase compared to the Louisiana Purchase were intense in some parts of the US. Many people compared it to Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase. The former cost 53 cents per acre which was 18 times more expensive than the latter. To top it off, the size of the Gadsden deal was 27 times smaller.
they got mad so they did not give the land sick that is a lie
He is still considered one of the worst presidents Mexico has ever had. He is the responsible for losing Texas during the Texas Revolution (1835 - 1836) and almost half of the country during the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). The last straw was the Gadsden Purchase (1853), which included southern New Mexico and Arizona. This last action was so outrageous to the Mexican people, that Santa Anna was overthrown in 1855 and sent into exile for the following 19 years. He returned to Mexico during a general amnesty, but he was ignored by the Mexican government and people until his death in 1876.
At the time, most Mexican people already suspected that Santa Anna had deliberately contributed to Mexico's defeat during the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). Even if Santa Anna successfully fended off a belligerent James Gadsden, who demanded the acquisition of all territories north of the parallel 25 N -- which would have included 40% of the remaining Mexican territories after the Mexican-American War -- the treaty was deemed as treason by the Mexican people, resulting in the Revolution of Ayutla (1854 - 1855) and eventually, the Plan of Ayutla (1854) which ousted Santa Anna for good. Having being exiled from Mexico for 19 years, it wasn't until 1874 that Santa anna returned to Mexico, dying of old age two years later.
Most Mexican people agree Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is the worst president Mexico has ever had, as he is responsible for losing Texas in 1836 and California, Nevada, Utah and the rest of Colorado as well as most of northern New Mexico and Arizona during the Mexican-American War in 1848. Finally, although he was pressured by a threatening James Gadsden, he sold southern New Mexico and Arizona to the United States in 1853. This last act was seen as a treason from part of the Mexican people, who promptly deposed him.
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1794 - 1876) qualifies as such. He is blamed for the loss of Texas (1835-1836) and for playing both sides during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). After the Gadsden Purchase (1853) people had had enough of him, and was finally deposed for good.
According to census.gov, the 2007 ACS population estimate for Gadsden, Alabama, is 36,936.
The Gadsden Purchase was the United States' land acquisition from Mexico in 1853. The U.S. paid $15,000,000 (including $3,000,000 in claims of American citizens) for the 45,535 square miles of land that became the southern parts of Arizona and New Mexico. The purchase was made by James Gadsden, for who the purchase was named after.
Prior to becoming a state New Mexico was home to many people including Native Americans. The state was also explored and colonized by Spain. There was also many revolts and wars. Then it became Mexican territory.
