He is still considered one of the worst presidents Mexico has ever had. He is the responsible for losing Texas during the Texas Revolution (1835 - 1836) and almost half of the country during the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). The last straw was the Gadsden Purchase (1853), which included southern New Mexico and Arizona. This last action was so outrageous to the Mexican people, that Santa Anna was overthrown in 1855 and sent into exile for the following 19 years. He returned to Mexico during a general amnesty, but he was ignored by the Mexican government and people until his death in 1876.
