Many different people were slaves. As recently at the 1800s African People were slaves in the Southern United States. In Medieval times Christians had Muslim slaves and Muslims had Christian Slaves. Most of these slaves were procured because of war. The Ottoman empire took Christian slaves. Vikings took slaves from their raids and were taken as Slaves when defeated in places like Ireland. Roman law defined a slave in the Corpus Luris Civilis as 1. anyone whose mother was a slave, 2. anyone captured in battle, 3. anyone who has sold himself to pay a debt. Slavery was important for Greek civilization too. Most Athenian citizens owned slaves and the Spartans infamously enslaved their neighbors the Helots. The Aztecs (from Mexico) had slaves. China too had slavery that was officially abolished in the early 1900s. The Egyptians famously enslaved the Israelites (and indeed had many more slaves). And slavery occurred in ancient Jewish communities with Jewish and Non-Jewish people. This answer surely does not scratch the surface of "What people were Salves?" and it should be noted that the laws and customs that governed slavery differed significantly in different times and places.
