The expansion of the Universe should not be thought as if matter expands quickly in an existing space; it is space itself that is expanding. This is a confusing topic; read the Wikipedia article on "metric expansion of space" for a brief introduction.
Space can be occupied by matter. If not how do planets move? If you're asking: Does outer space have matter? Then I would say yes, but very little, little enough to be called a vacuum. Outer Space has a few atoms per square meter.
Space in In its own life cycle
The universe IS space, plus everything that's in it.
Basically, we don't know what happened in our Universe, before the so-called age of the Universe was about one Plank time. Thus, that's as close to "the beginning" as we can currently theorize. At that time, what is now the OBSERVABLE Universe occupied much less space than a proton occupies nowadays; however, the entire Universe may have been much larger.

Volume of an object is a measure of the space occupied by objects.

Does sound occupied space?
The amount of empty space in the Universe, between galaxies, is many times larger than the amount of space occupied by galaxies. This ratio depends on what part of the Universe you are looking at. For example, our galaxy has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years; the closest larger galaxy (M31) is at a distance of about 2.5 million light-years. However, that's just the Local Group; from the Local Group to another galaxy cluster, there is even more empty space.
