What personal and political factors led to the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828?

Jackson won the popular vote in 1824 but lost out in House. Therefore his supporters campaigned seriously for him during the next 4 years. He was a frontiersman from the West, an Indian fighter ,hero of the War of 1812 and was altogether a colorful personality with a striking appearance. His opponent J. Quincy Adams was old school, rather stolid , had never been in the military was not impressive physically. Jackson's running mate, Calhoun helped him carry the South.

Andrew Jackson attained national fame from his victory in the Battle of New Orleans. He came to Washington and might have run in 1816, but Thomas Jefferson had plans for James Monroe and Jackson agreed to wait until 1824. He won both the popular vote and the electoral vote in 1824, but did not have the required majority of electoral vote, since the vote was divided among four candidates. Therefore the House decided the election. In what was termed a "corrupt bargain" by jackson supporters, Henry Clay directed his supporters to vote for John Quincy Adams so that Adams won. Clay was then appointed Secretary of State, which position, in those days, was considered a stepping-stone to the presidency.

Because Jackson's supporters felt cheated by the election of 1824, they took steps to win in 1828. They gained control of several newspapers and produced a constant stream of anti-Adams editorial. Jackson got himself elected to the Senate and so was a presence in Washington. Maybe more important they organized a pro-Jackson party and conducted the first national campaign in 1828.
