No, Tracfone SIM cards can only be used in Tracfones. Its locked and theres no way around it (I've tried)

The TracFone / NET10 SIM Card is very unique. It can only be used in a phone sold by TracFone or NET10. Once a phone is activated the SIM Card is tied to the Serial Number of the phone. It can not be removed and placed in a different TracFone or NET10 phone. It has to stay with the phone it was originally activated in. The units/minutes are not stored on the SIM Card they are stored in the phone itself. The TracFone / NET10 SIM Card can not be used in any other GSM technology phone. TracFone and NET10 both have an elaborate database of all the phones they have ever sold in it. You can not activate a phone unless the Serial Number is in their database. If you purchase a phone that has not been properly scanned by a retailer you will not be able to activate it.=You can not change the SIM Card and activate a TracFone on the NET10 website and you can not change the SIM Card and activate a NET10 phone on the TracFone website. If you try you will be directed to the proper website for activation.==There are three types of SIM cards currently being used by TracFone and NET10 depending on the Zip Code you will be using the phone in the most. SIM cards with a part number ending in C4 are on the AT&T/Cingular network, cards ending in T5 are on the T-Mobile network and cards ending in D6 are on the Dobson network which was recently acquired by AT&T.==You do not have to buy a SIM Card for a TracFone or a NET10 phone. There are two types of TracFones now, CDMA and GSM. This refers to the type of network used by the phone. And CDMA phone works only on CDMA networks, and same for GSM. GSM phones have SIM cards, CDMA do not (for the purpose of this discussion, anyway). I'm not clear on your reason for asking this question, but that's your answer. A CDMA phone does not have a SIM card. NEW ANSWER: I have an iPhone with AT&T and previously had a phone that was with Cingular. I have taken the SIM card from both phones and have put them in the Tracfone and can use it to access information about the services from the companies kind of like PC mode but you can't do calls or access the internet. You can't do anything really with the AT&T SIM being it's a smart phone SIM. I had to play with it to try and get it to show up but it did not want and gave system unavailable messages. Best thing to do is stick with Tracfone SIMs. Or if your savvy, program a blank SIM by copying your current SIM or a host of options available on the internet to get you going with a new SIM programed for Tracfone without having to go to a retailer and get one, which is really easy to do so why not just do that. However, if there's a will there is a way, so if you want a way to trick your Tracfone to work using another carrier's SIM, check out the internet on how to do that and get the codes and info. I won't state how here since that's unethical and hey, I'm ethical ahem, but hey, the Internet is a free place to check out and learn from. So have fun. HINT: Amazon.com is a great place to buy SIM copiers, blank SIMS, and everything you'd need if going that route. PRIOR ANSWER: i beleve it has a very small possibilty of working. i have a Motorola tracfone c 261 and if you go to the code entry mode under prepaid and type *#121# it displays "CINGULAR1". it is in amongst the WAP info. this might just mean that you can go to the cingular WAP webpages using tracfones service.

Well, From what I am understanding the answer is no. Tracfone is weird, because the SIM card serves no purpose, but it's cell phones wont work without it. All information is stored in the phone. Also, Tracfone's SIM cards have GSM with a CDMA lock on it. Basically, It has to do with how signals are received from the cell phone towers. However, I am trying to do the same thing right now, and maybe get a good result. =/ From tekgek: From my experience, yes, you can. Put the sim card in an unlocked phone, and it should work. I tried this with a nokia e51 and n81, and was able to send and receive calls. (Don't know about any of the other features). The only thing that you will lose is the ability to see how many units you have left. If that does not matter, then go ahead! From Spyguy10709 You really cannot do this. tracfone locks your IMEI of your SIM card to the IMEI of your phone. Unless you work there, you can't get around this. Sorry!
Why does your tracfone say its roaming in the local calling area?
Because it is not using the home tower. In my zip code (CDMA market), Verizon and US Cellular are the two providers. My Tracfone should be using Verizon towers, but it is using the US Cellular towers and showing roaming on the phone in the home area. Whenever the home towers are not being used, the Tracfone will show roaming on a CDMA phone. GSM phones are a different story.
