Washington's picture first appeared on the quarter in 1932, the bicentennial of his birth and 130 years after his death.
It's hardly a "house". As you can see from the caption under the picture, the back of the bill has a picture of the Lincoln Memorial.

The new design was intended to be a short-term commemorative, with the previous Standing Liberty design being resumed in 1933 or '34. It proved to be so popular that it was made permanent.
Hold the bill in front of you. Then move your eyes down below the picture very carefully and read the words below the image. They'll say Independence Hall.

A quick check of the US Mint's site reveals that the back of the 2005 California quarter depicts naturalist John Muir, a California condor, and the Half Dome rock formation in Yosemite Valley.
